چکیده

Periodic coupling between the various modes in an optical fiber is of current interest in interferometric and sensor applications. Coupling between the two cross-polarized modes of a single-mode birefringent fiber has been studied,1 as has coupling between the LP0 1 and LP 11 modes in a circularly symmetric fiber. 2 The latter case was achieved by periodically squeezing the fiber. It has been demonstrated in theory, however, that coupling between the LP01 and LP11 modes can be achieved much more efficiently by introducing microbends into the fiber instead of squeezing it.3 This Letter describes such an efficient LP01 to LP11 modal coupler that was built and tested. Microbends were introduced into the fiber, spaced by a beat length between the two modes. The optical-frequency dependence of the modal coupler is investigated. The polarization characteristics and the LP mode approximation both inside and outside the coupling region are discussed. Finally the insertion loss of the modal coupler was measured. The length of fiber over which the relative phase delay between the LP01 and LP11 modes is 2r (LB) is

Analysis of intermodal coupling in a two-mode fiber with periodic microbends.

Simple expressions for the coupling between the LP(01) and LP(11) modes of a two-mode optical fiber with a periodic microbending structure are developed. Implementation of the microbend structure using a flexural acoustic wave is described. The dependences of the acoustic frequency and power requirements on the pertinent fiber parameters are presented.

Highly selective evanescent modal filter for two-mode optical fibers.

Efficient and selective coupling between a single-mode fiber and the LP(11) mode of a double-mode fiber is demonstrated in an evanescent directional coupler. With greater than 90% coupling to the LP(11) mode, suppression of the coupled power to the lower-order LP(01) mode was measured to be at least 24 dB. This device has application as a modal filter for the construction of in-line all-fiber o...

1 x N star coupler as a distributed fiber-optic strain sensor in a white-light interferometer.

A novel technique of using a 1 x N star fiber optic coupler as a distributed strain sensor in a white-light interferometer to measure the distribution of strain is presented. The measuring principle and 1 x 4 star coupler with four fiber optic strain sensors are demonstrated. The experiment is performed with four sensors attached to a combination plastic specimen.

Development of an Optical Fiber Sensor for the Measurement of Angular Displacements in Anthropomorphic Systems

Due to the arising importance and widespread role of robotic systems, it is fundamental the development of high-performance position sensors. There are several existing methods to determine position of anthropomorphic manipulators. However, they present limitations, such as vulnerability to electromagnetic fields or application of mechanical load to the system. Concerning these problems, an opt...

Soliton Switching in Fiber Coupler with Periodically Modulated Dispersion, Coupling Constant Dispersion and Cubic Quintic Nonlinearity

In this paper we present the soliton dynamics in a two port fiber nonlinear directional coupler with periodically modulated dispersion and coupling constant dispersion that arose due to the intermodal dispersion between symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the coupler. The fiber material possessed cubic quintic nonlinearity. The influences of the coupling constant dispersion, periodically modul...
